Post #15 Can I run yet?

Met with physical therapy the other day and told her the good news. However, when I told her the doctor gave me the green light for running she laughed. She said "you won't be running anytime soon. My guess is you won't even be able to attempt running until December".  BUMMER!

My therapist said that my bones may be healed enough; but my muscles are no where near ready for me to run. I still have a slight limp when I walk. And i have difficulties with lunges. She said once I can walk without a limp and my lunges become easier then we can discuss running. I asked if I just wasn't trying hard enough. she said no, it just takes awhile for muscle to build back up.  That helped me feel a little better.

She also thinks the reason why i limp/have difficulties with lunges is because my quad muscle is tight. If my muscle is tight then my patella won't glide correctly in the groove, making it painful during movement. She gave me a couple stretches to work on. And sure enough I am extremely tight in my quad. If i do the same stretches on my left leg they are pretty easy; on my right leg, boy those suckers are hard! So maybe once I get this quad stretched out exercising will be a little less painful.

  1. How is your knee doing these days? I am getting the fulkerson and MPFL done to my left knee in a few months and am really curious to see if you have full recovered!

    1. My knee is doing great! I wont lie I am still in pain. However, its not enough pain for me to take medicine and ever day the pain becomes less and less. Its just a very slow healing process. With that being said I am beyond excited to do my other knee (hopefully in march of next year). The difference between my left knee (non surgery knee) and my right is night and day. I feel so stable! Before surgery my knees (no matter how much i exercised) always felt shaky. Like i was wearing extremely high heels and at any time I could lose my balance. I've always felt like this, no matter how much i worked out. Post surgery only my left leg feels shaky, my right leg feels like a rock; that knee is solid.

I am more than happy to give you more insight if you'd like it. But all in all DO IT! The pain i have is annoying. Not going to lie. But I know that will eventually go away. To feel like my knee is solid and not going to dislocate feels amazing. I feel so strong! ha.

Oh i do have issues with bending still. My physical therapist said I may never have the full range of bending back. But its pretty dang close to what I have in my left leg. Its just stiffer and I still have to work on stretching it. I don't know if that common, or if I've just gotten lazy (which I have) with my physical therapy.

    2. That is great to hear! I am really glad you made this blog - it seems like most of the stories you find online are all people who have had negative experiences. Good luck with your second knee! I hope my journey goes as good as yours!

I look forward to your future blog posts :) That is if you decide to write more...

    3. That's why I wrote this blog! Before surgery I could barely find anything and i went into surgery blindly. I'm so glad to hear this blog has given at least one person a little bit of insight. It has definitely been rough. But my outcome is totally worth it to me. I just wrote a new blog. just need to edit it. Ill try to have it up by tomorrow! :-) good luck on your surgery. Let me know how it goes! I'm honestly curious how it went for someone else. so please keep my updated

  2. I found people's personal experiences sooooo helpful pre and immediately post surgery, it was hard to know what to expect so thanks for sharing. I know this blog was written some time ago but I'm only commenting for others who may find it to share my "good" experience. I had my tibial tubercle osteotomy in late June this year. I wouldn't say it wasn't painful but nowhere near as bad as I was expecting and I only needed painkillers for the first few days. was back in work after 4 weeks (albeit it's mostly a desk job), out of brace in 6 and full range of movement within about 8 weeks. I'm exactly 4 months post surgery now and I have zero pain, can do pretty much everything I want (apart from contact sports) and am super happy with how easy it has been to recover with a bit of hard work in the gym and lots of determination and focus. Good luck to anyone else having it done!
